Moon Sand! A Fun Craft on a Snowy Day (Plus an Easy Dinner Recipe!)

We have been stuck inside for a whole day now, and it is starting to get to us! This winter may or may not kill me! I’m SO ready for Spring. One way to make the long days inside not so long is to try new and exciting craft and science activities with your kids. Thanks to my sister-in-law for suggesting this awesome moon sand that we made today. It’s so easy, fun, and something different!

James was definitely about to lose it today a few times, since we have been stuck inside the house due to a huge snowstorm that hit us this morning. We also had snow last week, so besides going out to play a few times, we didn’t want to risk leaving the house with the kids.

Here’s what we are looking at right now! When we have to be stuck inside all day, I like to take out some of my fun recipes or craft ideas that we don’t get to do every day. Some of my favorites include slime, homemade play dough, baking, macaroni play, and water play.

This weekend my sister-in-law mentioned that she tried a moon sand recipe with my nephew and he loved it! I have made moon sand before with my students, but totally forgot about it. It resembles sand, but also molds like clay. I made mine with coconut oil so that it would be edible (just in case).

Here’s the recipe:

2 Cups of All Purpose Flour

1/2 Cup of Coconut Oil

A Few Drops of Food Coloring

Melt the coconut oil in the microwave, then mix the oil and flour together with your hands until it molds together, but still falls apart, if that makes sense! Put a few drops of food coloring in and mix together again. We used pink for Valentine’s Day.

This is before I mixed the color in well! James loved making snowmen with the moon sand and driving his toy car over it. What an easy indoor activity that is fairly easy to clean up as well!

For dinner tonight, we had one of our favorites – baked haddock. This is SUCH an easy, toddler friendly recipe that your whole family will love. Click here to get the recipe! You can pair it with whatever sides you want! We usually do rice or mac and cheese, and a vegetable. Enjoy!
